Bridge

WHY BRIDGE?

Black Studies has generated vital knowledge about history, identity, power, resistance and social transformation. However, access to this knowledge remains uneven, particularly outside universities.

BRIDGE was created to connect Black Studies with the people, communities and institutions that can use it.

We provide a bridge between:

  • academic knowledge and community experience;
  • research and practical action;
  • Britain and the wider Black diaspora;
  • established scholars and future generations;
  • education, policy and social change.

We are committed to making Black Studies accessible, relevant and capable of producing lasting impact

Our Values

Liberation

We use education and research to challenge inequality and expand the possibilities available to Black communities.

Accountability

We are transparent about our decisions and accountable to the communities, partners and funders involved in our work.

Community knowledge

We recognise that valuable knowledge exists within communities, not only within universities and professional institutions.

Care

We place dignity, wellbeing, relationships and an ethics of care at the centre of our practice.

Collaboration

We develop work with people rather than simply delivering programmes to them.

Global connection

We understand Black experiences as locally distinct but globally connected across Africa, the Caribbean, Britain, the Americas and the wider diaspora.

What We Do

  • Black Studies courses and educational programmes;
  • Global Black Studies curricula and learning resources;
  • community-engaged and participatory research;
  • research evaluation and impact support;
  • programmes for children and young people;
  • professional training and organisational development;
  • conferences, workshops and public events;
  • international educational and research partnerships;
  • consultancy on race, intersectionality and inclusive practice.

Collaboration

We welcome collaboration with communities, schools, universities, charities, public bodies, cultural organisations, funders and international partners.

Whether you are interested in developing a Black Studies programme, commissioning research, evaluating a project, creating culturally responsive resources or building an international partnership, we would be pleased to explore what we can achieve together.

BRIDGE Mission

Research. Education. Community. Global Impact.
